Mandatory Inbound Travel Insurance for Your Tanzania & Zanzibar Adventure: Essential Coverage Guide

November 4, 2025 • 2 min read

Embarking on a journey to Tanzania and Zanzibar promises unforgettable experiences — from witnessing the Great Migration in Serengeti to relaxing on Zanzibar’s pristine beaches. But before you set off, securing the right travel insurance is one of the smartest decisions you can make.

Exemptions: None — travel insurance is mandatory for all travelers, regardless of any existing private coverage.

Zanzibar’s Mandatory Travel Insurance (From October 1, 2024)

Important Update: Starting October 1, 2024, travelers to Zanzibar must obtain Zanzibar Mandatory Travel Insurance, regardless of existing policies. This applies to all visitors entering Zanzibar via airport, ferry, or land.

Key Details

Cost: USD 44 per person.

Coverage: Emergency medical expenses, repatriation (medical/body), personal accidents, baggage delays/theft/loss, legal expenses, and personal liabilities.

How to Apply: Online via the official portal at visitzanzibar.go.tz  Complete before arrival; receive a QR code to show at immigration.

Key Reasons to Get Covered:

Medical Emergencies – Access to quality healthcare may be limited in remote safari areas. Evacuation to a larger city or neighboring country can cost thousands of dollars.

Trip Cancellations or Delays – Flights to and from Zanzibar or safari connections can be disrupted by weather or logistics.

Lost or Delayed Baggage – Protect your essentials when transiting through multiple airports.

Adventure Activities – Many travelers engage in diving, hiking, or safaris — ensure your policy includes coverage for these.

COVID-19 & Other Illnesses – Some policies now include pandemic-related coverage, which remains useful.

Whether you’re trekking Mount Kilimanjaro, exploring Serengeti’s savannahs, or relaxing in Zanzibar’s turquoise waters, travel insurance is your essential safety net. The right coverage ensures that if something unexpected happens, you can focus on your adventure — not the costs.
